PhD & PsyD psychologists dedicated to providing you the highest quality psychotherapy

Princeton Psychotherapy Specializes In:

  • General mental health concerns encompass a wide range of conditions that affect emotional, psychological, and social well-being. These issues may include any challenge that impacts your quality of life or ability to cope with daily life and maintain a sense of balance and fulfillment.

  • Anxiety disorders are characterized by excessive and persistent worry, fear, or apprehension that can significantly interfere with daily life. These conditions may manifest in various forms, such as generalized anxiety, panic, chronic stress, social anxiety, and specific phobias, creating challenges in managing and navigating everyday situations.

  • Depressive disorders involve persistent feelings of sadness and/or a lack of interest or pleasure in activities. These conditions, including major depressive disorder and persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia), impact one's mood, energy levels, and overall ability to function. People experiencing these symptoms often feel hopeless about the possibility that things will get better, but there is substantial evidence that psychotherapy can help reduce these symptoms and improve quality of life.

  • Perinatal mental health refers to the emotional well-being of individuals during pregnancy and the postpartum period. We provide therapy and support for perinatal conditions including perinatal depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), as well as pregnancy and infant loss and grief.

We welcome individuals and couples of all gender identities and sexual orientations who plan to start or expand families through traditional means of conception or through assisted reproductive technologies and third-party reproduction.

  • The transition to parenthood is one of the most challenging and intense transitions that we make over the course of our lives. We provide therapy and support for individuals and couples at every stage of the family planning process, including those facing issues like making decisions about whether to start or expand their family, fertility challenges, pregnancy, postpartum, and parenting from newborn to the young adult years.

Advice about parenting is plentiful but often misses the mark. Young parents are told that “it goes so fast,” and you should “enjoy every moment.” At Princeton Psychotherapy Center, we believe that this well-meaning advice can create stress and pressure for parents to enjoy a period of time that may have beautiful moments, but can also be tremendously challenging. It is hard to “enjoy every moment” when you are sleep deprived and trying to soothe an inconsolable baby—and while you are in it, it may not feel like the time is passing so quickly.

We welcome individuals and couples of all gender identities and sexual orientations.

  • We welcome individuals and couples of all gender identities and sexual orientations who plan to start or expand families through traditional means of conception or through assisted reproductive technologies and third-party reproduction.

  • Achievement pressure refers to the stress and expectations individuals may experience due to the perceived need for high levels of success, accomplishment, or performance in academics, career, or personal goals.

Many teenagers and young adults experience high levels of achievement pressure, especially in high school and applying for college. This pressure can lead to heightened stress, anxiety, a sense of striving for unattainable standards, feelings of meaninglessness, and a lack of fulfillment or joy. We work with adolescents and adults to reduce the negative effects of achievement pressure, to find equilibrium, and to build meaningful and fulfilling lives.

  • Perfectionism is characterized by setting excessively high standards for oneself along with a persistent and often self-critical pursuit of flawlessness.

If you struggle with perfectionism, we will work with you to develop healthier perspectives, coping mechanisms, and self-compassion, and to find a more balanced and realistic approach to achievement and personal growth.

  • Insomnia is a sleep disorder characterized by persistent difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or achieving restorative sleep that impacts your overall wellbeing and functioning.

We offer Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), a structured therapeutic approach that addresses sleep-related issues by targeting maladaptive thoughts, behaviors, and routines, aiming to improve the quality and duration of sleep as well as your overall physical and psychological wellbeing.

  • Stress can have a major negative impact on the quality of your life. Therapy serves as a valuable resource for managing stress by providing you with tools to identify and cope with stressors effectively. We will work collaboratively with you to explore the root causes of stress and will offer tailored strategies to enhance stress management skills and improve overall well-being.

  • Our Health Psychologist Dr. Amoha Bajaj-Mahajan specializes in working with individuals facing a wide range of health issues, including cancer, chronic pain, and adjustment to medical illness. Dr. Bajaj-Mahajan will work with you to identify and change negative thought patterns, manage stress, develop effective coping strategies, and promote healthier behaviors, thereby improving your overall psychological well-being and enhancing your ability to navigate and cope with the challenges posed by your health condition.

  • Health anxiety is a condition characterized by worry, fear, or preoccupation with the possibility of having a serious medical illness, often leading to heightened distress, frequent medical appointments, and excessive monitoring of bodily sensations.

We work with individuals experiencing health anxiety to develop coping mechanisms and manage their anxiety, ultimately empowering them to navigate their health-related worries with greater resilience and understanding.

  • There are many transitions that we go through that can cause stress, anxiety, sadness, and other adjustment difficulties. You may be struggling with a break up, a move, career changes, or the transition into or out of college. Even positive changes in life can bring about a sense of loss for what was, or anxiety and uncertainty about what’s to come. We will work to help you better understand yourself and explore your challenges, providing insights and coping strategies to foster personal growth and ease the adjustments to changing circumstances.

  • If you have experienced a loss, we will work with you to express and process the often complex emotions associated with grief. We will work with you to navigate this difficult time, cope with your loss and the impact it has on your life, and manage overwhelming feelings.

  • We offer an affirming and safe space to explore and navigate the unique challenges and experiences that face individuals and couples who identify as LGBTQ+.

  • We work with individuals and pairs who are facing difficulties in their romantic and non-romantic relationships. We work to help you understand and address problematic patterns in your relationships, improve communication, and to develop more fulfilling connections with others.

  • The period of early adulthood is characterized by change, transition, and uncertainty. It’s a period when many people first experience or seek help for mental health struggles. We are familiar with the challenges of early adulthood and will work with you to understand and address your areas of difficulty and navigate this challenging period.

  • Many people seek therapy because of various challenges in their careers. You may be feeling stressed, stuck, unfulfilled, or uncertain about you careers. We will work to help you manage stress and to determine the best direction for you in your career.

Getting Started With Therapy

First Step:

  • We’ll start with a free 15-minute phone consultation for you to ask any questions you might have. We’ll also discuss what brings you to therapy and determine which of psychologists fits your needs best.

  • If we are a good fit for your needs and you would like to proceed, we’ll schedule an initial meeting either in our Princeton office or via Zoom.

  • If at any point you do not wish to continue in the process, we are happy to provide you with referrals to other clinicians.

Beginning Therapy :

  • In our initial 1-3 meetings, we will work together with you to understand more about the issues that you are facing, identify your goals, and establish a treatment plan. We listen closely to you and your unique needs every step of the way. There are no one-size-fits-all answers here.

Continuing Therapy :

  • Open communication is an essential element of therapeutic work, and it often benefits and furthers the work in important ways. We always welcome your feedback and encourage you to let us know if you have any questions or concerns at any point in this process.
